About Toto
The group Toto was formed in the year 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro and David Paich (who were also highly acclaimed studio musicians who worked with Boz Scaggs at the time) as well as bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. The name of the group came from a Latin word that means "all-encompassing" and was determined to explore every musical style.
Toto's third release, Turn Back, was not a success in 1981. However, they bounced back with their fourth release, Isolation, which contained two hits, including the title song and Roseanna. The album and the tour made them a household brand around the world.
After a brief hiatus, Toto returns with the album Fahrenheit. It is a departure from the ballads of their previous albums and features some heavy rock. This was their first platinum album in North America.
During the recording of the band's fifth album, the band loses their manager and is faced with financial difficulties. They decide to change their name and create a new album with the new producer. Joseph Williams, the son of John Williams, the legendary film composer and actress Barbara Ruick from 1950s, replaces Fergie Frederiksen as lead vocalist. Joseph is a more natural frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a needed boost.
In 1999, the band releases Mindfields and begin an extensive worldwide tour. After a few weeks in Europe, the band heads to Japan for sold-out shows. After a short break, Toto resumes recording and begins recording their first live album, Absolutely Live in 1993 which includes the cover of Weezer's track Hash Pipe in response to the band performing their hit song Africa during the recent tour. Toto's touring lineup is completed by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.
